Byron Veasey: Who Am I?
From Layoffs to Leadership – My Journey in Data Quality and Career Reinvention
Hello, Substack community!
If you've been following my writings on LinkedIn or X, you might know me as a voice in career strategies, job search tips, and data quality engineering. But today, I want to pull back the curtain and properly introduce myself.
People never know who you are until you introduce yourself—so here I am.
I'm Byron Veasey, MBA, MMgt, a Data Quality Engineering Leader with over ten years of hands-on experience transforming data integrity challenges into efficient, reliable solutions. Currently, I'm serving as a Data Quality Engineer (contractor) at Southern Company, one of the largest utility holding companies in the U.S. My role focuses on maintaining high standards in their Customer Data Platform, leveraging expertise in data governance, security, ethics, and quality assurance. In an industry where data drives everything from customer service to regulatory compliance, I ensure that information is accurate, secure, and ethically managed—helping optimize operations for millions across the Southeast.
My path here wasn't straightforward. I started as a regular LinkedIn reader, quietly absorbing content until life threw curveballs: two layoffs in three years. Those experiences flipped my world upside down. The job search tactics that worked pre-2011? They fell flat in 2023 and beyond. Confused and determined, I dove into research—YouTube videos, podcasts, books—and emerged with fresh insights. That's when I became a writer and content creator, sharing my journey to help others navigate similar storms.
Education has been my foundation. I hold a bachelors in engineering, an MBA and a Master of Management from prestigious institutions: the University of Southern California, Ball State University, and the University of Dallas. These degrees blended business strategy with technical skills, propelling me from industrial engineering to database administration, data modeling, warehousing, data lakes, and now data quality engineering. But I'm a lifelong learner—I've completed courses in cutting-edge data science, AI ethics, and more, always staying ahead in this fast-evolving field.
Recognition along the way has been humbling. In September 2018, I received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who for my leadership in IT. I was also featured in the 6th Edition of Millennium Magazine. I'm an active member of DAMA International (Data Management Association) and the Project Management Institute (PMI), where I network, share knowledge, and advocate for best practices.
In an era where data is "the new oil," my work at Southern Company underscores the need for quality control to drive sustainability and innovation. But on a personal level, my story is about resilience—turning setbacks into comebacks. If this resonates, subscribe here on Substack for more on data trends, career advice, and real-talk insights. Based in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, I occasionally share job opportunities at Southern Company (remember, I'm a contractor, not a hiring manager). My goal? To foster talent and build authentic connections.
Why share this now? Because in 2025, visibility and proof matter more than ever. Don't just apply—build signals, spark conversations, and get remembered.
